Mark DeWolf was a dedicated NE-SFMA member, deeply committed to the industry. He coordinated educational events, served on the board of directors, and was named Sports Field Manager of the Year in 2013. As Sports Grounds Manager at Brewster Academy in. Wolfeboro, NH for nearly 30 years, he took great pride in both the athletic fields and the teams that played on them. He passed away in November 2022.

Mark’s indomitable spirit and commitment to professional development are the inspiration for the new DeWolf Student Scholarship & Grant programs, supporting the next generation of sports field managers.

$1500 Mark DeWolf Outdoor Education Scholarship Deadline: June 10

This scholarship in named in honor of the late Mark DeWolf, an avid outdoorsman and life-long sports field manager. The $1500 scholarship is awarded annual in July at NE-SFMA’s Annual Memorial Golf Tournament.

Requirements:


      • Provide proof of enrollment, or acceptance, at an accredited New England college or university.
      • Studying sports turf management, or a closely related field (e.g. environmental sciences)

      • Submit an essay, not to exceed 500 words, outlining scholarship worthiness including chosen course of study, personal achievement, and career goals, and scholarship worthiness.

      • Provide a letter of support from a college or university professor or approved equal.

      • Complete application and submit all essay and letter of support by June 10.

      • Past scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply.

$500 DeWolf Direct Tool Kit Award Deadline: June 10

This $500 grant is available to high school students who are planning to go directly to work in a turfgrass related field after graduation. The award will be in the form of an industry supplier gift card that will be used to help with new job-related expenses (e.g. tools, safety gear). It will be given to recipient in July.

      • Provide proof of high school graduation

      • Submit a brief essay on green industry position and how grant will support that new role.
      • Complete application and submit essay by June 10.

$500 DeWolf Green Student Program Grants Deadline: December 10

This $500 grant is available to public school programs (elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as vocational and technical schools). The intention of the grant is to help support projects, equipment, educational programming, or transportation costs related to turfgrass management or environmental studies.

      • School administrator to apply with two letters from students describing the need for and us of grant awards.

      • Complete application and submit students’ letters by December 10.

$1000 Charles K. Mruk Scholarship Deadline: December 10

This scholarship is named in honor of the late Charles K. Mruk, a dedicated member of the turf industry in New England, who believed in the importance of education and professionalism in our field. The $1000 scholarship is awarded annually in March at the New England Regional Turfgrass Conference in Providence, Rhode Island.

Requirements:


      • Provide proof of enrollment, or acceptance, at an accredited New England college or university, studying sports field management.

      • Submit an essay, not to exceed 500 words, outlining “How NE-SFMA’s Mruk Scholarship would help me advance my sports field management studies and career goals.”

      • Provide a letter of support from a college or university professor or approved equal.

      • Provide school transcript.

      • Complete application and submit all required documentation by December 10.

      • Past scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply.
