Position Overview
The Weston Public Schools is seeking to hire a Head Groundsperson. The Head Groundsperson is a working foreman who maintains and improves outdoor sports surfaces and landscapes to ensure they are safe, high-quality and visually appealing. They lead the grounds crew and operate machinery in scheduled maintenance tasks such as pruning, mowing, fertilizing and aeration. They also perform seasonal activities such as spring and fall cleanup and snow removal. This role reports on a day-to-day basis to the Field and Grounds Coordinator. This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, exclusive of a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. About the Weston Public Schools
The Weston Public Schools enrolls approximately 2,000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school district includes a high school for grades 9-12, a middle school for grades 6-8, an upper elementary school for grades 4-5, and two lower elementary schools for pre-kindergarten through grade 3. Since 1967, Weston has participated in METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) - a voluntary, desegregation program that places Boston residents in suburban schools. The Weston METCO program enrolls approximately 166 students (K-12).
Key Responsibilities

- Maintaining athletic fields, roadways, plowing, caring for turf, trees, shrubs, repair and preventive maintenance of equipment.
- Must respond to weather emergencies or athletic/town events as needed.
- The ability to lift and transport school property, supplies and athletic equipment between schools and/or town buildings.
- Prepare and mark athletic fields to required standards
- Prepare and apply traffic markings to paved surfaces per specifications
- Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
- Two years or more experience in the supervision of groundspersons.
- Knowledge of the tools and techniques and their application for landscaping and athletic field maintenance.
- Grasp of the basic maintenance and operation of irrigation systems.
- Ability to train and supervise staff in groundskeeping and safety practices
- Knowledge and experience with water conservation practices.
- Employment is contingent upon the possession of, or the ability to obtain a hoisting license within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Perform all duties performed by groundspersons in all other categories.
- Demonstrate ability to handle a number of demands at one time.
- Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, other school system employees, the public, and other town departments using the grounds and athletic fields.
- Must perform moderately heavy work.
- Operate all grounds equipment necessary for maintenance and preventative maintenance.
- Setup specifications for grounds maintenance program.
- Train personnel.
- Prepare daily reports and other logs; overseeing weekly distribution of overtime.
- Submit inspection reports, as necessary.
- Inspect the grounds for maintenance and security.
- Deal with emergency situations.
- Employ sustainable practices as directed
- Properly use a variety of grounds equipment and supplies; maintain inventory and prepare requisitions.
- Participate in the development and implementation of best practices and long and short teRM plans.
- Proficiently use computerized maintenance systems including daily updating of work orders to keep records accurate.
- Perform all other duties as requested by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Physical Demands
Must be able to stand and/or perform repetitive laborious tasks for extended periods. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, and use hands to operate equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and complex documents and to use a computer. Must be able to the lift 70 pounds.
Compensation
The compensation for the Head Groundsperson will be $29.11 - $32.66 per hour. Additionally, the Weston Public Schools offers a comprehensive benefits package, including employer sponsored health insurance, paid time off, and the ability to participate in the Middlesex County Retirement System.
