Position Summary:
The Associate Director plans, directs, manages, leads, and actively participates in the overall operation of the Grounds Department in order to maintain a safe and attractive landscape which includes all campus grounds, roadway infrastructure, athletic fields and the rink complex. The Associate Director is responsible for assigning, training and evaluating work for Grounds personnel proactively, while also ensuring compliance with applicable health and safety standards where required. This position is a working supervisory position with expectations that include manual labor.
Supervises:
Staff of 6 to support Grounds/Rinks
Responsibilities:
● Develop and implement a displayed schedule of maintenance for the campus landscape, roadways, parking infrastructure, and athletic fields for staff to easily work from.
● Manage a seasonal master plan for distribution for the proper care of campus.
● Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates necessary cultural practices for turf and tree care, irrigation, stormwater management.
● Work with the Director of Athletics and Equipment Manager to ensure that the athletic fields are prepared and set up seasonally with the necessary athletic equipment for their use.
● Ensure that the mechanical equipment and ice surfaces in the ice arena are readied and maintained throughout the seasons for ice sports as well as for indoor training during inclement weather in the fall and spring seasons.
● Ensure that all Grounds staff are trained on safe operating practices for the equipment that they use, and provide them with the necessary safety equipment.
● Responsible for the Grounds Department budget preparation and management; coordinates the requisitioning and purchasing of Grounds supplies and equipment;
● Develops contract specifications and scopes of work when appropriate.
● Ensures compliance with applicable rules, laws, and policies including those related to hazardous materials handling and communications to the community.
● Implement efficient and safe snow removal plans in order to maintain continuity of campus operations.
● Provide support for special events such as setting up, removing and storing tables, chairs and equipment.
● Communicates with administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information.
● Coordinate the inspection, identification, and correction of all required safety protocols pertaining to grounds and rink operations.
● Responsible for the general maintenance of Grounds vehicles and equipment as well as multiple school owned vehicles.
● Recruit, screen, interview, hire, and train Groundskeepers when applicable.
● Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
● Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Director of Operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
● High School diploma or equivalent
● 10 years of Grounds keeping experience
● Supervisory experience
● This position is a key member of our essential staff with regards to emergency operations related to weather and must be available during emergencies.
● Knowledge of OSHA requirements related to typical grounds work.
● Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communications skills
● Excellent tact and diplomacy skills
● Experience with Microsoft Office is desirable
● Candidate must pass nationwide criminal record check
Physical Requirements:
● Work in a school campus environment. Possess the ability to lift 50 pounds, walk up and down stairs, attend meetings in various locations across campus and use various hardware and software technologies as required.
