WESTWOOD DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

The Town of Westwood seeks to add a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) to the Fields and Grounds team within the Department of Public Works. The HEO will provide skilled manual work in the operation of heavy motor equipment related to fields and grounds projects.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

• Performs fields and grounds maintenance, such as mowing grass, field grooming and lining, irrigation installation/repairs, tree removal and disposal of leaves, and trash removal.
• Assists other team members in turf maintenance practices such as aerating, sod cutting/replacement, seeding, weeding of infield skins and clay infield installation and removal.
• Operates specialized and heavy equipment, such as backhoe, front-end loader, and other DPW vehicles; performs manual labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment.
• May assist with other DPW projects, including repair and maintenance of roadways; patching potholes; building and repairing curbs and sidewalks; excavating and backfilling trenches; repairing road signs; and clearing and trimming of brush along roads/highways and in the public right-of-way.
• Depending on seasonal needs, may be temporarily assigned to any division/section of Public Works; expected to provide on-call duties during snow and ice emergencies.
• Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.

Qualifications and experience: High School graduate or equivalent; 3 years of experience in Public Works construction and maintenance activities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of Public Works heavy motor equipment operation and mechanics; working knowledge of the materials and techniques required for maintenance and repair projects.

Massachusetts Class B/Commercial Driver’s License required; Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s license required, 2A preferred, 2B and 4G required. Frequent heavy physical effort required in performing work under field conditions with unavoidable exposure to bad weather and a variety of hazardous conditions.

An applicant hired into this position without the required licenses will be required to obtain them within six (6) months of employment.

Salary: This is a 40 hour-per-week, benefit-eligible, union position. Salary range is $2,225.09 - $2,555.93 biweekly. Westwood offers a generous benefits package.
