Job Summary:

The Grounds and Athletics Tradesperson will perform maintenance and work on campus grounds, and athletic fields & facilities. Along with other team members, it is their primary responsibility to prepare and maintain campus grounds and athletic fields and facilities for use by The Governor’s Academy students, rental and camp groups. Secondary responsibilities will include various facilities maintenance tasks as needed in other trades.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform work on various natural and synthetic turf athletic fields throughout the season including but not limited to; mowing, blowing off, raking, grooming, lining, seeding, fertilizing, setting up nets, and more.
  • Maintenance and set up of athletic venues and facilities including; track and field equipment, tennis, volleyball, basketball, softball, field hockey, football, cross country, and more.
  • Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, string trimming, mulching, planting, seeding, fertilizing, leaf collection, tree trimming, trash and recycling collection, and more.
  • Snow and ice removal activities include but are not limited to; shoveling, snow blowing, plowing, and sand/salt spreading.
  • Utilize the Academy’s maintenance software program, SchoolDude to monitor daily work requests.
  • Assist with Summer Programs and support special event preparations, including graduation, alumni events, and various camp and sporting events.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of landscaping and athletic fields and facilities maintenance and operations and be willing to learn and collaborate.
  • Participate in disaster preparation and response as needed.

Qualifications and Skills Required for Position:

  • Three to five years of experience working in landscaping, grounds, or athletic fields and facilities maintenance and operations roles.
  • Any leadership experience or a degree in Landscaping or Turf Management is not required, but helpful in considering applicants.
  • Must be a positive team contributor and communicate effectively with all team members.
  • Must have the ability to multitask and prioritize projects and work requests
  • Able to read written work requests, understand verbal instructions, and perform multiple basic tasks. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required to communicate with various stakeholders within the campus community.
  • Have the ability to drive all trucks and operate all equipment used in the maintenance operation. Must have a valid driver’s license. Possession of a valid MA Hydraulic Hoist Operators license is helpful but not required(1C/2A).
  • Possession of a valid MA state pesticide applicators license is helpful but not
  • required.
  • Must be able to work both independently and with a team on various projects as assigned.
  • Ensure safety precautions are properly implemented during all activities.
  • Must be able to work collegially; must be committed to working in a diverse community and have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations; must enjoy working with young people in a boarding school environment.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends, when necessary.


Monday – Friday, typically 07:00 am to 3:30 pm. Overtime, weekends and nights may be required.

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Grounds and Mechanical Supervisor.

Physical Demands

To perform essential functions of the job, the following applies:

  • Physical ability to perform all job functions and work in wet and/or cold environments
  • Must work safely and wear proper attire to suit the conditions of the job function.
  • Is able to work on a ladder.
  • Is capable of standing, bending, walking, and climbing stairs.
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
