PLAYGROUNDS AND BALLFIELDS SEASONAL GROUNDSKEEPERS
Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department - Parks, Athletic Facilities, and Playgrounds Division -
May through November, full-time schedule (up to 40 hours/week) - flexible schedules and reduced hours can be considered) and could include mornings, afternoons, weekends, and nights starting in early spring -
Responsibilities include mowing, trimming fields, parks, and general playground maintenance, as well as, opening/closing facilities, turning on/off light systems, and setting up fields for events. Parks and/or athletic experience preferred but not required. Responsibility, maturity, dedication and the ability to work in varied weather conditions are a must. Applicants for Groundskeeper positions can be 16 or 17 years old but with certain work restrictions. A valid Maine Class C driver’s license is preferred, and a Department of Motor Vehicle check will be conducted on those who have one. Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
Groundskeeper positions start at $18.00/hour.

Phillips Academy seeks a full-time grounds person. The Phillips Academy Grounds Department maintains over 300 acres (295acres of manicured lawn, 31 acres of Athletic Fields) of turf including lawns and athletic fields. Qualified candidates must have at least one year of experience in landscape maintenance; general knowledge of tree, shrub, and turf maintenance; and the ability to operate lawn-mowing equipment, assist in leaf and snow removal operations, work in all weather conditions. Experience with turf management is a plus. This is a full-time position offering excellent benefits, and overtime as required. NATURE OF WORK:
Administrative, supervisory and skilled manual work in the maintenance of Town grounds and in the maintenance and operation of Town cemeteries; all other related work as required.
SUPERVISION:
Works under the direction of the Recreation, Grounds & Special Events Coordinator/ Manager. Supervises divisional staff as assigned.
JOB ENVIRONMENT:
Frequent moderate to strenuous physical effort required to perform duties with exposure to occupational risks connected with equipment operation and all weather conditions. Errors could result in damage to costly equipment, unsafe conditions on cemetery grounds and roadways, time loss, monetary loss, delay and loss of service and have legal repercussions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Ability to deal with the public effectively and compassionately. Ability to maintain good public relations. Ability to perform moderate physical effort under all weather conditions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma plus a minimum of five (5) years experience in grounds maintenance pertaining to cemeteries parks, playgrounds and playing fields. Advanced training in turf management preferred. Specifically training in systems, techniques materials, equipment used in the field. Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Class B Driver’s license with air brake endorsement and hydraulics and catch basin endorsement.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Moderate physical effort is required. Frequently required to stand, walk, speak and hear. Occasionally required to lift or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to conduct visual inspections in the field, read documents, and operate a motor vehicle and heavy equipment.

Description
Perform various duties such as grass cutting, raking, digging, pruning, trimming, planting and caring for trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers, grass, etc., consistent with the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds, greenhouses and the athletic fields. Remove and dispose of rubbish and trash, sweep walks and roadways, remove debris. Shovel and salt walkways, stairs and streets. Move equipment and materials between locations as needed. Maintain and clean equipment as needed or required.
• Perform a variety of landscaping grounds maintenance and other related duties. Work from written or verbal orders and instructions. Maintain a high standard in the appearance of finished work. Furniture and equipment moved from building to building. Pick-up and disposal of campus trash.
• Use or operate hand and power equipment as required. Development of skill in the safe and efficient use and operation of department equipment.
• Take basic care of department equipment and vehicles. Department equipment and vehicles cleaned and washed as required. Indoor work and storage areas maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
• Observe all safety rules, practices, and procedures. Defective and unsafe equipment and/or situations reported to supervisor immediately.
• Available in times of emergency, inclement weather, and special functions. Shift change during the week and any other given function. 24-hour on-call from November through April for inclement weather. Required overtime is worked during Spring clean-up, commencement, Alumni Weekends and other campus functions.
• Work for the good and morale of the organization, loyal to the chain of command and support the programs and policies of the Physical Department. Team solving of problems through the chain of command.
• Supervise and direct temporary employees as necessary
• Obtain and maintain a MA Pesticide Applicators License within first six months of employment.
• Obtain and maintain a MA Hoisting License within the first three months of employment.
• Obtain and maintain a MA DOT Medical Card within the first two weeks of employment.
• Ability to lift 100 pounds

Applicants are not expected to have experience in tennis court maintenance, but rather a desire to excel in any area of the turfgrass management industry. This position is an ideal opportunity to learn and obtain experience in a variety of areas of turfgrass management, including the unique aspects of professional-level grass and clay tennis court maintenance.
Enrollment at UMass or Stockbridge in turfgrass management, plant science, soil science, crop science, horticulture or related field is preferred.
Ability and desire to work independently and with the sports turf management team
The utmost attention to detail is required to provide the highest quality playing surfaces and landscaped grounds achievable.
Expect to be involved in all aspects of turfgrass management, including, but not limited to: operating specialized turf equipment, field layout and painting, chemical applications for plant health, irrigation operations, and attending crew and club committee meetings and events.
Start Date is flexible. Typical work schedule is 7am-3pm, 5-7 days per week in the summer and shoulder seasons, with more overtime shifts available.
Compensation is competitive with equivalent positions at professional sports teams and private golf clubs in the area. Compensation also includes: performance and holiday bonuses, daily lunch provided, uniform shirts provided, and tennis and pool privileges. The position is also encouraged to volunteer for local turf related events, such as USGA and PGA events. Housing available through Mt. Ida UMass Campus.

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
